Cette visite nous tient \u00e0 c\u0153ur car il nous semble qu&#8217;elle fait partie int\u00e9grante de la riche histoire de construction du pays, et nous fait penser \u00e0 Ellis Island \u00e0 New York, qui nous avait beaucoup impressionn\u00e9es. Grosse \u00cele a \u00e9t\u00e9 la station de quarantaine pour tous les immigrants arrivant au Qu\u00e9bec entre 1832 et 1937. divis\u00e9e en 3 parties distinctes : <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>la partie ouest accueillait les sujets sains le temps de leur quarantaine (le temps \u00e9tait variable selon la maladie du moment, typhus, cholera, etc, donc entre 5 et 21 jours) dans 3 h\u00f4tels diff\u00e9rents suivants leur classe (dans le bateau),<\/li><li>la partie centrale accueillait le village, des familles des travailleurs saisonniers sur l&#8217;\u00eele (la station fonctionnait seulement quelques mois dans l&#8217;ann\u00e9e), mais aussi les r\u00e9sidents \u00e0 l&#8217;ann\u00e9e,<\/li><li>la partie est \u00e9tait consacr\u00e9e aux malades.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Nous traversons la partie village dans notre petit train :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-1 is-cropped gardien<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Le gardien avait un r\u00f4le crucial : sa maison \u00e9tait situ\u00e9e sur la fronti\u00e8re entre le village et le quartier des malades, il devait donc surveiller attentivement ce qui se passait d&#8217;un c\u00f4t\u00e9 (4 fen\u00eatres c\u00f4t\u00e9 village) et de l&#8217;autre (6 fen\u00eatres c\u00f4t\u00e9 quartier des malades) :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"621\" La station a connu quelques h\u00e9sitations d&#8217;organisation \u00e0 ses d\u00e9buts, notamment du fait que les immigrants \u00e9taient entass\u00e9s dans des bateaux \u00e0 voile comme du b\u00e9tail pendant 40 jours en mer, et que les virus s&#8217;y propageaient donc largement. La quantit\u00e9 de malades \u00e0 g\u00e9rer \u00e9tait importante, notamment pendant la trag\u00e9die de 1847 qui a vu des dizaines de milliers d&#8217;Irlandais fuir leur pays \u00e0 cause de la famine (provoqu\u00e9e par le mildiou dans les pommes de terre et par les anglais). 5000 des 7500 personnes mortes pendant les 105 ann\u00e9es de service de la station de quarantaine sont mortes pendant cet \u00e9t\u00e9 affreux de 1847. Les conditions se sont d&#8217;ailleurs bien am\u00e9lior\u00e9es avec le d\u00e9veloppement des bateaux \u00e0 vapeur (d&#8217;o\u00f9 les &#8220;classes&#8221;) car il n&#8217;y avait plus que 5 \u00e0 7 jours de mer et les migrants \u00e9taient moins entass\u00e9s dans les bateaux. d\u00e9sinfect\u00e9, les sujets sains commen\u00e7aient donc leur quarantaine et devaient se soumettre de nouveau \u00e0 une inspection r\u00e9guli\u00e8re pendant leur quarantaine. Les non vaccin\u00e9s devaient se faire vacciner obligatoirement afin de pouvoir fouler le sol canadien ensuite.
